Port Edward was laid out on Banner’s Rest and bought by Mr. Pringle for his retirement. It was renamed Port Edward in honour of the Prince of Wales, who later became King Edward VIII. Port Edward has a delightful beach that overlooks a hill known by Europeans as ‘Tragedy Hill’. The coast here at Port Edward is known for its shipwrecks and in 1878, ‘The Ivy’ ran aground on the beach. When the locals realised its cargo included hundreds of cases of wine, beer and spirits, they went on the biggest binge of their lives!

Port Edward is situated on the lower South Coast and is an ideal holiday destination for those wishing to escape the bustle and bustle of the bigger resort towns. The town offers excellent sporting facilities, including tennis and squash courts, a golf course and bowling greens. The Wild Coast Sun and Casino is situated close to Port Edward for those seeking excitement of a different nature.
